In celebration of the World Oceans Day 2022, the DENR – Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) inked a partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for the protection of Philippine marine environment in observance of the World Oceans Day 2022. Aligned with this year’s theme, “#Revitalization: Collective Action for the Oceans”, a ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was held to officially launch the partnership between the DENR – Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The MOA signing marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the two Agencies, thereby strengthening the collective engagement of various government instrumentalities with direct supervision and mandates over the vast resources found in the Philippine marine waters.
The concept of a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it. For all these reasons, it was necessary to create awareness through an Observance. That is why, by its resolution 63/111 of 5 December 2008, the UN General Assembly designated 8 June as World Oceans Day.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) sponsors the World Ocean Network, which has since 2002 been instrumental in building support for ocean awareness events on 8 June.
