The yearly observance of the Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) made possible through Presidential Proclamation No. 79 series of 1999 invites the nation to come together and celebrate the life of our national bird, the magnificent Philippine eagle. With the theme “The Philippine eagle: A National symbol, A Global treasure” this year’s PEW highlights that the Philippine eagle, while endemic to the Philippines is a global heritage that requires the concerted efforts of the international community for its conservation, such that if we lose this bird, the whole world loses.
Celebrating the 21st year of the PEW, a proud nation rejoices as a pair of captive-bred Philippine eagles make their way to Singapore on June 4, 2019 as ambassadors of Philippine biodiversity. The loaning of Philippine eagles, Geothermica andSambisig, to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) is a historic milestone in our conservation efforts for this Critically Endangered (CR) raptor, as we engage for the first time, a foreign wildlife facility, the WRS-Jurong Bird Park in the conservation breeding of our national bird. With the millions of annual visitors of Jurong Bird Park, we are bringing the Philippine eagle closer to the international community in the hopes of encouraging international attention and support for its conservation.
