Adopted on the last day of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal, Canada last December 2022, this is a landmark agreement to guide global action on nature through to 2030. The GBF aims to address biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems and protect indigenous rights. The plan includes concrete measures to halt and reverse nature loss, including putting 30 per cent of the planet and 30 per cent of degraded ecosystems under protection by 2030.
The KM-GBF consists of four(4) overarching global goals with 23 targets to be achieved by 2030.
Aside from the above 23 targets by 2023 the KMGBF (Biodiversity Plan) has four (4) main goals until 2050 for a “shared” vision and responsibility to halt and reverse biodiversity loss for all life on earth.
To support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Conference of the Parties adopted the Communications strategy through decision 15/14. The communication strategy includes a logotype and public-facing name for the Framework, and short titles for the goals and targets which are meant to be used in public communications.
“The Biodiversity Plan’s identity captures the essence of natural beauty, composed of 23 distinct elements. Each element represents one of the targets, forming a unified whole that reflects the interconnectedness, illustrating the need for global action. The logo symbolizes our connection to all life on the planet and the intricate beauty that surrounds us.” (from CBD GBF branding toolkit page)
PBSAP alignment with KM-GBF
The Philippines is currently reviewing and updating the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP) to align with the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The objectives of the consultations are:
- Review the progress and align the current Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP) to the KMGBF
- Enhance the action plan with concrete targets and indicators including Biodiversity Finance Plan to help country achieve its national targets and contribute to global goals; and
- Identify areas for collaborations
The series of consultations with biodiversity experts resulted in national strategies towards identified opportunities in contributing to the achievement of the 30×30 global targets visually represented through the following drawings:
