The Urban Biodiversity Program is a program focusing on regaining the ecosystem services to develop resiliency and improving the wellbeing of people thru effective management of the urban green spaces in the Philippines.
In order to guide major cities in evaluating and monitoring of their progress towards biodiversity conservation, the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources issued a policy last 2018 prescribing the Procedures in the Conduct of Assessment of Urban Biodiversity and another policy prescribing the Guidelines on Urban Biodiversity Management Planning Process last 2021.
The above guidelines recommends the use of the City Biodiversity Index (CBI), also known as the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity (Singapore Index) as the monitoring tool to assist local authorities in evaluating their progress in urban biodiversity conservation against their own individual baselines. The CBI consists of two(2) parts, one being the city profile and the 2nd part containing the 28 indicators as measurements of the core components grouped as follows: native biodiversity (indicators 1-9), ecosystems services (indicators 10-14), and the city biodiversity governance and management (indicators 15-28).
