In celebration of #WorldWildlifeDay 2021 and in the culmination of USAID’s four-year Protect Wildlife project, USAID Environment Office Deputy Chief Paul Seong handed over a new wildlife ambulance to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its National Wildlife Rescue and Research Center.
The ambulance, the first of its kind in the country, is equipped with complete tools for wildlife handling, tagging. and on-site veterinary examination to help DENR improve its response time in wildlife rescue and retrieval and provide immediate onsite care for injured and trafficked wildlife.
USAID also handed over the complete system and manual of WILDBase, a centralized online database for systematic recording and monitoring of rescued wildlife. WILDBase will help DENR-established wildlife rescue centers transition from paper-based to digital systems. It will be used by 25 regional centers in different hubs across the Philippines to efficiently manage their records of confiscated and rescued wildlife. USAID’s Protect Wildlife project helped address biodiversity loss through the sustainable management and conservation of the Philippines’ wildlife resources.
